The Seed

Messengers — The Seed

One message, planted again and again by every messenger God sent: worship God alone.

We did not send any messenger before you except with the inspiration: “There is no god except Me; you shall worship Me alone.”

[21:25]
The Grow Your Soul emblem: a tree with deep roots on an island, the sun rising behind it and a waterfall beside it, inside a green and gold circle with a leaf

A seed is small. Yet the whole tree is already inside it. Plant it in any land, and the same tree grows.

God's message is like that seed. He sent it with every messenger, to every people, in every age. Each time it was the same message.

God tells us so in plain words: “We have sent a messenger to every community, saying, ‘You shall worship GOD, and avoid idolatry.’” [16:36] That “We” is God speaking.

This section follows that seed through history. It starts with Adam and Noah. It comes to Abraham, the father of the line. Then it follows his children to Moses, Jesus and Muhammad.

Perhaps you grew up Jewish, Christian or Muslim. Then you already know these names. Our hope is that you meet them again here, through the Quran, and hear what they really said.

One Message, Every Messenger

The Quran does not describe a new religion for each messenger. It describes one religion, given again and again.

God says to Muhammad: “We did not send any messenger before you except with the inspiration: ‘There is no god except Me; you shall worship Me alone.’” [21:25]

In one verse, God speaks to Muhammad and names Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus beside him: “He decreed for you the same religion decreed for Noah, and what we inspired to you, and what we decreed for Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: ‘You shall uphold this one religion, and do not divide it.’” [42:13]

Now listen to the messengers themselves, and to God speaking to Moses. The table below puts their words side by side. The peoples changed. The languages changed. The centuries changed. The message did not.

The Same Words, Messenger After Messenger

In each row, the words come straight from the Quran.

MessengerThe message, in the Quran's words
Noah“O my people, worship GOD; you have no other god beside Him.” [7:59]
Hûd“O my people, worship GOD; you have no other god beside Him.” [7:65]
Sãleh“O my people, worship GOD; you have no other god beside Him.” [7:73]
Abraham“You shall worship GOD, and reverence Him.” [29:16]
Joseph“All ruling belongs to GOD, and He has ruled that you shall not worship except Him.” [12:40]
Shu'aib“O my people, worship GOD; you have no other god beside Him.” [7:85]
MosesGod said to him: “I am GOD; there is no other god beside Me. You shall worship Me alone” [20:14]
Elias“Do you worship a statue, instead of the Supreme Creator?” [37:125]
Jesus“GOD is my Lord and your Lord; you shall worship Him alone. This is the right path.” [3:51]
Muhammad“I am no more than a human like you, being inspired that your god is one god.” [18:110]

Abraham, Where the Line Divides

Abraham stands in the middle of the story. Adam and Noah came before him. Moses, Jesus and Muhammad all came from his children.

God says of Abraham: “We granted him Isaac and Jacob, we assigned to his descendants prophethood and the scriptures” [29:27]. The Torah, the Gospel and the Quran all came to his descendants.

God made Abraham's two sons, Ismail and Isaac, prophets [19:54] [19:49]. Abraham and Ismail prayed for a messenger from among their descendants [2:129]. Muhammad came in answer, sent “to recite to them His revelations, purify them, and teach them the scripture and wisdom” [62:2]. Isaac's son was Jacob, whom the Bible also calls Israel. Moses, Mary and Jesus came from the Children of Israel [19:58].

Abraham himself was not Jewish or Christian. Those names came later. God says: “Abraham was neither Jewish, nor Christian; he was a monotheist submitter. He never was an idol worshiper.” [3:67] And God reminds us that “the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him” [3:65].

Abraham passed the same message to his children. Jacob, on his death bed, asked his sons what they would worship after him. “They said, ‘We will worship your god; the god of your fathers Abraham, Ismail, and Isaac; the one god. To Him we are submitters.’” [2:133]

Much of what believers practise today began in his family. God appointed Abraham to set up the Shrine [22:26]. God told him to call the people to the Hajj pilgrimage [22:27]. God says of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that “we taught them how to work righteousness, and how to observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and the obligatory charity (Zakat)” [21:73].

God also gave us our name through him. Our religion is “the religion of your father Abraham. He is the one who named you ‘Submitters’ originally.” [22:78] And God commanded Muhammad to “follow the religion of Abraham, the monotheist” [16:123].

Jews, Christians and Muslims all look back to Abraham. The Quran invites all three to look at what he actually did. He worshiped God alone.

From Adam to Muhammad: One Family

God sums up the whole line in one verse. The prophets He blessed were “chosen from among the descendants of Adam, and the descendants of those whom we carried with Noah, and the descendants of Abraham and Israel” [19:58]. Here is that family in one picture.

  1. AdamThe first in the line. God chose him [3:33].
  2. NoahMessenger [26:107] and prophet [6:89]Saved with the believers in the ark [26:119].
  3. AbrahamProphet [19:41] and messenger [57:26]A follower of Noah's way [37:83]. God's beloved friend [4:125].With Lot, a messenger [37:133], who believed with him [29:26]

  2. Abraham and Ismail pray for a messenger from among their descendants [2:129].
  3. Many generations
  4. MuhammadMessenger and the final prophet [33:40]The Quran was sent down to him [47:2]. Sent to recite, purify and teach [62:2].

Through Isaac and Jacob (Israel)

  1. IsaacProphet [19:49]Abraham's son [6:84].
  2. JacobBible: Jacob, also called IsraelProphet [19:49]Taught his sons to worship the one god [2:133].

  7. MaryThe mother of JesusA pious woman: “his mother was a saint” [5:75]. God “has chosen you and purified you” [3:42]. “She believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures; she was obedient.” [66:12] Of the family of Amram [3:35], a descendant of Aaron [19:28].With Zachariah, her guardian [3:37], a prophet [6:89], and his son John, a prophet [3:39]
  8. JesusMessenger [4:171] and prophet [19:30]The son of Mary. Given the Gospel [5:46].
  • Parent and child, or brothers, as the Quran names them
  • Many generations in between

Not every prophet sits on this line. Hûd, Sãleh and Shu'aib were sent to their own peoples [7:65] [7:73] [7:85]. Every one of them is in the table below. Where a name shows [6:89], that verse speaks of everyone named in 6:83-86: God gave them “the scripture, wisdom, and prophethood” [6:89].

Prophets and Messengers

The Quran tells us who each of them was. It names some as prophets, some as messengers, and some as both.

Muhammad was both. God says: “He was a messenger of GOD and the final prophet.” [33:40]

Jesus was both. God calls him “a messenger of GOD” [4:171]. And as a baby in the crib, Jesus said God “has appointed me a prophet” [19:30].

Moses was both. God says: “He was devoted, and he was a messenger prophet.” [19:51]

Abraham was both. God says: “he was a saint, a prophet” [19:41]. And he was sent as a messenger to his people: “We sent Noah and Abraham” [57:26] [9:70].

Each one delivered the same message. And not one of them was more than a human servant of God.

The Prophets the Quran Names

God tells Muhammad: “Messengers we have told you about, and messengers we never told you about.” [4:164] These are the ones He names. The last column says what the Quran calls each one. Where it shows [6:89], that verse speaks of everyone named in 6:83-86: God gave them “the scripture, wisdom, and prophethood” [6:89]. The Quran column uses the spelling of the translation on this site.

Messengers, Not Gods

No messenger ever asked to be worshiped. Not one.

God says no prophet would ever ask for worship: “Never would a human being whom GOD blessed with the scripture and prophethood say to the people, ‘Idolize me beside GOD.’” [3:79] Nor would a prophet “command you to idolize the angels and the prophets as lords” [3:80].

Yet people did it anyway. God says of them: “They have set up their religious leaders and scholars as lords, instead of GOD. Others deified the Messiah, son of Mary.” [9:31]

On the Day of Judgment, God will ask Jesus about this [5:116]. Jesus will answer: “I told them only what You commanded me to say, that: ‘You shall worship GOD, my Lord and your Lord.’” [5:117]

The same danger is close to Muslims too. God commands: “do not call on anyone else beside GOD” [72:18]. He taught the believers to say: “We make no distinction among any of His messengers.” [2:285] And about any other source, God puts the question plainly: “In which Hadith other than GOD and His revelations do they believe?” [45:6] There is more on this at Hadith & Sunnah.

So we honour every messenger. We love them, learn from them and follow the message they brought. But we worship God alone.

What Happened to the Earlier Scriptures

God gave Moses the scripture [2:87]. He sent down the Torah, by which the prophets of Israel judged [5:44], and He gave Jesus the Gospel [5:46]. God calls both the Torah and the Gospel “guidance and light” [5:44] [5:46]. A believer honours them.

But God also tells us what some people did with them. They changed the words. “Therefore, woe to those who distort the scripture with their own hands, then say, ‘This is what GOD has revealed,’ seeking a cheap material gain.” [2:79]

Others “took the words out of context, and disregarded some of the commandments given to them” [5:13]. Some even heard the word of God and changed it on purpose [2:75].

So people mixed their own words with God's words [2:79].

One of the clearest examples is about Jesus himself. About 300 years after Jesus, church leaders met in a council at Nicaea. There they declared Jesus to be God. Jesus never taught this. God says plainly: “You shall not say, ‘Trinity.’ You shall refrain from this for your own good. GOD is only one god.” [4:171]

The Quran, Kept Safe by God

God revealed the Quran to Muhammad. God speaks of “what was sent down to Muhammad—which is the truth from their Lord” [47:2]. And Muhammad was told to say that “this Quran has been inspired to me, to preach it to you and whomever it reaches” [6:19].

Unlike the earlier books, the Quran is kept by God. God did not leave its safety to people. He made the promise Himself: “Absolutely, we have revealed the reminder, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.” [15:9]

God says of it: “No falsehood could enter it, in the past or in the future” [41:42]. And He invites us to test it: “If it were from other than GOD, they would have found in it numerous contradictions.” [4:82]

God describes the Quran as “confirming previous scriptures, and superseding them” [5:48]. It confirms the truth that came before. And it has the final word.

This matters to every reader of this section. A Jew can meet Moses here. A Christian can meet Jesus here. A Muslim can meet Muhammad here. Each one as God describes him, in words no one has changed.

Nineteen: A Seal Built Into the Text

God did more than promise to keep the Quran. He also built a check into the text itself.

God says: “Over it is nineteen.” [74:30] In the next verse, God gives His reasons for the number. Two of them speak straight to the readers of this section. The number is there “to convince the Christians and Jews (that this is a divine scripture)” and “to strengthen the faith of the faithful” [74:31]. And God says: “This is one of the great miracles.” [74:35]

The Quran is put together around this number. Some of it anyone can count:

What we countThe numberIn nineteens
Suras in the Quran11419 × 6
Times the opening line “In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.” [1:1] appears11419 × 6
Letters in that opening line, in Arabic1919 × 1
Verses in sura 96, the first revelation1919 × 1
Where sura 96 sits, counting from the end19th19 × 1
All the sura numbers added together, 1 to 1146,55519 × 345

The opening line is missing from the start of sura 9. It appears a second time inside sura 27 [27:30]. So the count still comes to 114.

None of this is a condition of faith. Faith rests on God alone. But anyone who wonders whether the Quran has changed can count for themselves. God says the number is there “to remove all traces of doubt from the hearts of Christians, Jews, as well as the believers” [74:31].

Where the Quran Gathers the Messengers

Four verses to keep close.

Say, “We believe in GOD, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and all the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters.”
[2:136]
We have inspired you, as we inspired Noah and the prophets after him. And we inspired Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, the Patriarchs, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. And we gave David the Psalms.
[4:163]
These are some of the prophets whom GOD blessed. They were chosen from among the descendants of Adam, and the descendants of those whom we carried with Noah, and the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and from among those whom we guided and selected. When the revelations of the Most Gracious are recited to them, they fall prostrate, weeping.
[19:58]
These are the ones guided by GOD; you shall be guided in their footsteps. Say, “I do not ask you for any wage. This is but a message for all the people.”
[6:90]

One Seed, Many Gardens

Every messenger in this section planted the same seed. Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad each said the same thing. Worship God alone.

So the question for us is simple. Has that seed taken root in us? Or have we kept only the names?
