The Embryo

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

Read, in the name of your Lord, who created.

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

iq'ra bi-is'mi rabbika alladhī khalaq

He created man from an embryo.

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

khalaqa l-insāna min ʿalaqi

Read, and your Lord, Most Exalted.

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ

iq'ra warabbuka l-akram

Teaches by means of the pen.

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ

alladhī ʿallama bil-qalam

He teaches man what he never knew.

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

allama al-insana ma lamyaAAlam

Indeed, the human transgresses.

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ

kallā inna l-insāna layaṭgh

When he becomes rich.

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ

an raāhu is'taghn

To your Lord is the ultimate destiny.

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ

inna ilā rabbika l-ruj'ʿ

Have you seen the one who enjoins.

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ

ara-ayta alladhī yanh

Others from praying?

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ

abdan itha salla

Is it not better for him to follow the guidance?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

ara-ayta in kāna ʿalā l-hud

Or advocate righteousness?

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ

aw amara bil-taqw

If he disbelieves and turns away.

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

ara-ayta in kadhaba watawall

Does he not realize that GOD sees?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

alam yaʿlam bi-anna l-laha yar

Indeed, unless he refrains, we will take him by the forelock.

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

kallā la-in lam yantahi lanasfaʿan bil-nāṣiyat

A forelock that is disbelieving and sinful.

نَاصِيَةٍ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

nāṣiyatin kādhibatin khāṭi-ati

Let him then call on his helpers.

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ

falyadʿu nādiyah

We will call the guardians of Hell.

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ

sanadʿu l-zabāniyat

You shall not obey him; you shall fall prostrate and draw nearer.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب

kallā lā tuṭiʿ'hu wa-us'jud wa-iq'tari
