The Snatchers

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

The (angels who) snatch (the souls of the disbelievers) forcibly.

وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ غَرْقًا

wal-nāziʿāti gharqa

And those who gently take (the souls of the believers) joyfully.

وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ نَشْطًا

wal-nāshiṭāti nashṭa

And those floating everywhere.

وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ سَبْحًا

wal-sābiḥāti sabḥa

Eagerly racing with one another—

فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ سَبْقًا

fal-sābiqāti sabqa

to carry out various commands.

فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمْرًا

fal-mudabirāti amra

The day the quake quakes.

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ

yawma tarjufu l-rājifat

Followed by the second blow.

تَتْبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ

tatbaʿuhā l-rādifat

Certain minds will be terrified.

قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ

qulūbun yawma-idhin wājifatu

Their eyes will be subdued.

أَبْصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةٌ

abṣāruhā khāshiʿatu

They will say, "We have been recreated from the grave!

يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ

yaqūlūna a-innā lamardūdūna fī l-ḥāfirat

"How did this happen after we had turned into rotten bones?"

أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمًا نَّخِرَةً

a-idhā kunnā ʿiẓāman nakhirata

They had said, "This is an impossible recurrence."

قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ

qālū til'ka idhan karratun khāsiratu

All it takes is one nudge.

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ

fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatu

Whereupon they get up.

فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ

fa-idhā hum bil-sāhirat

Have you known about the history of Moses?

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ

hal atāka ḥadīthu mūs

His Lord called him at the holy valley of Tuwaa.

إِذْ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى

idh nādāhu rabbuhu bil-wādi l-muqadasi ṭuwa

"Go to Pharaoh; he has transgressed."

ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ

idh'hab ilā fir'ʿawna innahu ṭagh

Tell him, "Would you not reform?

فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ

faqul hal laka ilā an tazakk

"Let me guide you to your Lord, that you may turn reverent."

وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ

wa-ahdiyaka ilā rabbika fatakhsh

He then showed him the great miracle.

فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْءَايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

fa-arāhu l-āyata l-kub'r

But he disbelieved and rebelled.

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ

fakadhaba waʿaṣ

Then he turned away in a hurry.

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ

thumma adbara yasʿ

He summoned and proclaimed.

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ

faḥashara fanād

He said, "I am your Lord; most high."

فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

faqāla anā rabbukumu l-aʿl

Consequently, GOD committed him to the retribution in the Hereafter, as well as in the first life.

فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

fa-akhadhahu l-lahu nakāla l-ākhirati wal-ūl

This is a lesson for the reverent.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ

inna fī dhālika laʿib'ratan liman yakhsh

Are you more difficult to create than the heaven? He constructed it.

ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ بَنَىٰهَا

a-antum ashaddu khalqan ami l-samāu banāh

He raised its masses, and perfected it.

رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا

rafaʿa samkahā fasawwāh

He made its night dark, and brightened its morn.

وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا

wa-aghṭasha laylahā wa-akhraja ḍuḥāh

He made the earth egg-shaped.

وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ

wal-arḍa baʿda dhālika daḥāh

From it, He produced its own water and pasture.

أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا

akhraja min'hā māahā wamarʿāh

He established the mountains.

وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا

wal-jibāla arsāh

All this to provide life support for you and your animals.

مَتَٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ

matāʿan lakum wali-anʿāmiku

Then, when the great blow comes.

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

fa-idhā jāati l-ṭāmatu l-kub'r

That is the day when the human will remember everything he did.

يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ

yawma yatadhakkaru l-insānu mā saʿ

Hell will be brought into existence.

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu liman yar

As for the one who transgressed.

فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ

fa-ammā man ṭagh

Who was preoccupied with this life.

وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا

waāthara l-ḥayata l-dun'y

Hell will be the abode.

فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ

fa-inna l-jaḥīma hiya l-maw

As for the one who reverenced the majesty of his Lord, and enjoined the self from sinful lusts.

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ

wa-ammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihi wanahā l-nafsa ʿani l-haw

Paradise will be the abode.

فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ

fa-inna l-janata hiya l-maw

They ask you about the Hour, and when it will take place!

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا

yasalūnaka ʿani l-sāʿati ayyāna mur'sāh

It is not you (Muhammad) who is destined to announce its time.

فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ

fīma anta min dhik'rāh

Your Lord decides its fate.

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ

ilā rabbika muntahāh

Your mission is to warn those who expect it.

إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا

innamā anta mundhiru man yakhshāh

The day they see it, they will feel as if they lasted one evening or half a day.

كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا

ka-annahum yawma yarawnahā lam yalbathū illā ʿashiyyatan aw ḍuḥāh
